Application for Post-Doc Fellowships

A number of Post- Doc (BPD) Fellowships are available at the William James Center for Research (ISPA), funded by Portuguese National Science Foundation (FCT). The WJCR is a Center for Psychological Research, determined to enlarge its membership by recruiting young and dynamic researchers who are at the cutting edge of their respective fields and are already visible by their early career achievements. We aim to recruit such young, talented, and dynamic researchers who are dedicated to push the field and are ready to work in a creative and cooperative environment. The Center has received an ‘excellent' rating with 24 out of a possible 25 points in the last round of FCT evaluations. 



Mandatory requirements: These grants are intended primarily for successful Post Docs who are at the beginning of their careers and have already a number of international publications in their designated field of specialism in psychology. The aim of these grants is to allow the successful Post Docs to improve their research career during the two years so that they are able to apply successfully to a 5-year 'FCT Investigador' grant (see for the 2014 details of the program) or the FCT Post Doc Grants.

Job description: The WJCR is opening new 2-year Post Doc positions across all fields of fundamental and applied psychology. The expertise of the applicants need not be in a field already represented at the WJCR ( In exceptional cases, the Post Doc position can be extended for a further year.

The applicable laws and regulations: Law Nr. 40/2004, of 18th August (Scientific Research Fellow Statute); Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources, I.P.—2012.


Address of workplace: The candidate will be working in the William James Center for Research, in ISPA – Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida, under the scientific Directorship of Professor Gün Semin.

Duration: The position will for 12 months in the first instance, starting by May, 2015 extendable upon successful performance by another 12 months. In exceptional cases, the Post Doc position can be extended for a third year.

Monthly internship for full-time position: According to the regulations of the FCT Scientific Fellowships in Portugal ( the net salary will be of €1.495/month, which will be paid monthly by bank transfer. The fellow will be covered by a personal accident’s insurance and can contribute voluntarily to the national social security system, according to Decreto-Lei n.º 40/89, de 1 de Fevereiro.

A two-step selection procedure will be followed. First, candidates will be ranked based on their personal merit on the basis of their Curriculum Vitae (50%), Letter of Motivation (20%) and references (30%). The top candidates will be selected for a second phase, which consists of an interview.
